Der g\u00fcltige Name w\u00e4re eigentlich Euphorbia meloformis ssp. valida (G.D.Rowley 1998) aber ich benutze lieber den gel\u00e4ufigeren Namen Euphorbia valida unter dem sie der englische Botaniker Nicholas Edward Brown 1915 beschrieb. Valida entstammt aus dem lateinischen Wort f\u00fcr stark oder kr\u00e4ftig. Diese durch ihre verholzten Bl\u00fctenstiele auffallende Euphorbia kommt in S\u00fcd-Afrika in der Kapprovinz bei Janssenville, Ost-Somerset, an der Springbokvlakte bei Steyterville und an den Dikkop Flats vor.<\/p>\n

Der Unterschied zu Euphorbia meloformis die bereits 1789 von William Aiton beschrieben wurde, soll in der Form der Wurzel abweichend sein. Die vorgestellte Pflanze hat nur eine leicht verdickte bis faserige Wurzel, meloformis soll eine R\u00fcbenwurzel haben.<\/p>\n

Da ich nur Kulturpflanzen beider Arten pflege, konnte ich keinen Unterschied feststellen. Vielleicht wurden meine meloformis auch nur falsch benannt. Darum kann ich nicht nachvollziehen ob bei valida die Pflanzen gr\u00f6\u00dfer (-45cm hoch bis 12cm Durchmesser) als meloformis (-30cm hoch) werden und die verholzten Bl\u00fcten-Stiele l\u00e4nger an den Pflanzen bleiben, wie es in der Literatur aufgef\u00fchrt wird. Ein gro\u00dfes Problem bedeutet auch die leichte Kreuzbarkeit mit Euphorbia obesa. Man erh\u00e4lt oft optisch artreine Pflanzen die in Wirklichkeit Bastarde aus beiden Arten sind.<\/p>\n

Euphorbia valida ist zweih\u00e4usig dies bedeutet es gibt m\u00e4nnliche und weibliche Pflanzen. Auffallend ist, dass die m\u00e4nnlichen Bl\u00fcten schon viel fr\u00fcher im Jahr erscheinen.<\/p>\n
